Ultrafast optics for QUANTUM materials

QUANTUM TEAM: Ultrafast optics for QUANTUM materials

The QUANTUM group was established in January 2024 to explore the frontiers of quantum technologies by combining two complementary areas of modern physics expertise: (i) ultrafast dynamics in solids, and (ii) high harmonic generation in solid targets. We employ pump-probe experiments with tunable photons across a broad spectral range, from ultraviolet to far-infrared, to investigate matter dynamics on extremely short timescales (femtoseconds). These approaches aim to deepen both fundamental and applied knowledge of next-generation materials, such as quantum materials, ultrafast-switching materials, those designed for light emission and detection, battery materials, and quantum sensor materials. These studies pave the way for advanced applications, including ultrafast transistors, ultra-sensitive detection of electric and magnetic fields, as well as high-resolution imaging across diverse fields, from fundamental physics to medicine.

Our research lies at the heart of quantum technologies, with a particular focus on non-equilibrium phenomena, ultrafast phase transitions, and the interaction between different degrees of freedom (spins, charge carriers, phonons) in materials with high potential for quantum applications. We are also committed to developing cutting-edge experimental tools, such as high harmonic generation for quantum imaging with entangled photons, pushing the limits of current techniques and fostering the emergence of new applications.
