PhD thesis defense – Ginevra Begani Provinciali – X-ray phase imaging based on Hartmann Wavefront Sensor for applications on the study of neurodegenerative diseases

My thesis is focused on a new high-sensitivity X-ray phase imaging system based on a Hartmann X-ray wavefront sensor for the study of neurodegenerative diseases. A simulation program was created in order to optimize the manufacturing parameters of the Hartmann sensor according to the coherence level of the X-ray source used. A theoretical study of spot detection algorithms was performed on simulated and experimental data. The experimental results obtained with X-ray laboratory sources and with synchrotron radiation have been compared with phase contrast measurements in free propagation obtained with synchrotron.
